One small step for man...

The GT style event, in November.

This is the event i will go to for my first Warhammer Tournament [Well, first proper tournament, anyway] and i will be taking my trusty Wood Elves. Now, i know they have been, for want of a batter word, shafted in this edition perhaps and i could just put them down and use my Empire army i have been working on since the start of the year and shoot people to death with Mortars, and almost shut down their magic phase.

However, Wood Elves are my favourite army in Warhammer. I love the models, the background, the imagery and how they play. They might be overpriced, ineffective, partially redundant but damn they look good whilst doing it.

So there it is. 2000 points of Wood Elves will be being taken. I now need to get my hands on some movement trays, some paint and spruce the army up a bit from my previous paint-job which is starting to show it's age now. I'll post up pictures of how this is going, and expect quite a few Glade Guard and Treekin to feature in this 2000 points, because Treekin rock :D

After using the previous lists in a game against the Skaven once again [Best of 5 series and now i am 2-1 up after losing the last game] i have altered the list ever so slightly, but first a run down of the Skaven list and a short summary of the game which has called for some alterations.

Grey Seer, Bell, Skalm and some other items in a large unit of Clanrats maybe 50 strong.
Lvl2 Priest on Furnace in 30 Plague Monks w/Storm Banner
Queek in his unit of Stormvermin with the Banner of Clan Superiority [they have been upgraded to Queek's bodyguard]
Engineer with the Brass Orb
BSB with the Flaming Banner in a unit of 15 Jezzails

2 Hellpit Abominations

That is roughly his list, i have missed items and the like but thats because i can't remember exactly what his characters had. We played the Meeting Engagement Mission and i hid my Treemen and Eagle General behind a Temple of Skulls trying to avoid the Jezzails. Whom were deployed on the hill in the centre of his wedge of deployment. No reserves for him and my unit of Treekin were forced into reserve. He took out a Treeman with the Brass Orb early on and the other fell to a Hellpit. I took out the other one using my unit of 30 Glade Guard who used the Moonstone to teleport to the other side of the board and shot it down. I managed to get the Screaming Bell unit in the flank with my Treekin after he charged my Eagle general who fled but ran off the board. I took out almost all of the clanrats except for one on the other side of the bell [His champion] and got flanked by Queeks unit which failed to break them. This exposed them to my unit of Wild Riders who charged the rear and got that unit and all of its points. However the remaining Hellpit who dealt with the Treeman dispatched the Wild Riders in short order after i failed to get out of the way.

This ended the game with my having only a unit of Treekin on the board whereas he still had a Hellpit, Furnace and unit, Bell and unit, and Jezzails. I was thoroughly smashed in terms of VP and this caused some serious re-thinking of the list.

The Storm Banner and Howling Warp Gale seriously hamper my efforts with my flaming Glade Guard, so i am putting the Flaming Banner onto the Wild Riders who have the speed and strength to deal with HPA and hydras. The Noble now has a potion of strength to help in this goal. This stops my reliance on shooting and allows me to use them much differently than i have done before and i can then shoot the large blocks of troops to whittle them down before they hit my lines.

The Dragonbane Gem on the Eagle rider is a steal for 5pts and makes him a great distraction for a turn with those flaming Jezzails. [Plus the item is cheap enough to remain on the Lord in an all comers list anyway, should i have some points spare]

So with that small change it changes the dynamics of my list, with the Glade Guard not confined to monster hunting but now to put down some serious firepower and damage those nice T3 low armour rats. Without further ado, here is the new, improved, list.

Spellweaver, level 4, Great Eagle, Wand of Wych Elm, Dragonbane Gem [Lore of Life] (G)
Spellweaver, Moonstone of the Hidden Ways [Lore of Beasts]

Noble, Wild Rider Kindred, Steed, Potion of Strength, Helm of the Hunt

30 Glade Guard, Musician, Standard Bearer, Banner of the Springtide
14 Glade Guard, Musician
14 Glade Guard, Musician
16 Dryads

6 Treekin
11 Wild Riders, Full Command, Banner of the Eternal Flame

Treeman
Treeman

Thats the 3k list i am now using to decent effect. Already claiming a VC army in a close run game but the Wild Riders doing what they do best and pulling the game around in my favour in the last few turns netting roughly 800 points.

I'll be updating this blog with images of the repainting of the Wood Elves and also to keep it updated with the news from the small WFB tourny on the 1st of September i am attending and hopefully the GT styled event in November provided i can get some tickets.

Until next time,
Jacob

If you go down to the woods today...

After a few weeks using the Empire under 8th edition i find myself becoming frustrated with their play-style and their army book. And by all rights they are one of the strongest armies now in 8th edition, however i find myself becoming increasingly annoyed by the army book and so its time for a change. I dug out my Wood Elf army after leaving it in a case for over a year whilst i get my Empire up and running and i decided to give my 'first love' a try in 8th edition. I was apprehensive at first because a lot of the units i used to use like Wardancers are now pretty much obsolete and so i have 16 of those i can't use. After a few games and a few lists, i think i have found a list which suits my play-style once again and is competent in the new ruleset. At 3k points we have:

Lords

Spellweaver, Level 4, Great Eagle, Wand of the Wych Elm (Lore of Life)

Spellweaver, Moonstone of the Hidden Ways (Lore of Beasts) Joins the 30 Glade Guard

Heroes

Noble, Wild Rider Kindred, Elven Steed, Helm of the Hunt, Hail of Doom Arrow

Core

30 Glade Guard, Banner, Musician, Banner of the Eternal Flame

14 Glade Guard, Musician

14 Glade Guard, Musician

16 Dryads

Special

6 Treekin

11 Wild Riders, Full Command, Banner of Swiftness

Rare

Treeman

Treeman

That comes to just shy of 3000 points and has won games against a VC grave guard regen list and a Skaven list with a furnace, bell and double hellpits.

I have another 2 games today against a different VC list and the same Skaven player. Hopefully i can get the same kind of results against those. I'll Post the games up later.

FAQ'd Up

So here it is, the 8th Edition Rulebook FAQ. Nice and swift from GW and it's nice to see them taking a very active approach to the hobby with timely FAQ's and Errata's.

Recapping, the word is out on how Purple Sun works now so no bouncing through an entire battle-line, You can have ethereal Dragons thanks to the Transformation of Kadon and Okkam's Mind Razor DOES modify armour saves.

Though perhaps the most important one isn't the one which allows you to tear up a battle-line with an appropriately equipped Vampire Lord, it is in fact the combat reform rules have been altered so that you don't have to keep the centre of the unit the same when reforming in combat. This was necessary primarily to make the rule work because it just flat out didn't in the last few weeks of playing the game. This allows you to react to threats to your flank or reform to get your diminished horde formation into a good old fashioned 5 wide block unit.

Also Steadfast has been slightly changed to make the wording more clear and so it can now be combined with SiN [Strength in Numbers], rather than using the ambiguous [I say ambiguous because many people interpreted it in a number of different ways] 'unmodified Leadership'.

Good on GW for the fast response, and it can finally put some rather heated debates to rest.

The Deep Breath Before the Plunge

So, here i go. Blogging. Never done this before, never even considered it before, but i have the urge to suddenly write down things i do/my thoughts and my opinions on a place for all to see. Perhaps a cry for attention or just a need to open up to someone regardless of who they are or where they come from. In any case this will be very much a journey of exploration and realisation and you are more than welcome to join me.

Might as well kick this off by telling you a little bit about myself. I am a student of Architecture at the University of Nottingham and have finished my first year. I enjoy watching films, playing squash, football, video games and wargaming. Thats enough for now, don't want the first post to be too dull, so let's move on.

Fingers crossed this gets updated as and when i can and often as well. Whenever something happens i'll post it up.
